How Seriously Do you Take Internet Security? We attended a seminar recently hosted by the West Wales E-business Club on “How to protect your business information.” The seminar was targeted at internet security and it is a timely reminder for all businesses to make sure their systems are fully secure. A lot of publicity is generated about buying on line and on line banking but little time is given to loss of information held on computers within an office environment. Unless companies are well protected hackers can gain access to information either for malicious/opportunist reasons or deliberate stealing of competitor information or even altering prices on an e-commerce shopping site to make the company appear expensive. The increase of 'always on' internet access should make the business more security conscious. Firewalls, ant-virus software, password configuration and security patches for software should all be maintained and kept abreast of to ensure maximum protection. If in doubt it's worth seeking some professional assistance just to be on the safe side.

It is vital businesses, especially the SME sector gain access to key areas of assistance to help them in their development process.

Interest Rate Rise Last month saw the first interest rise for some time to 3.75 per cent in a bid to halt consumer debt and rising house prices. Various business organisations have given a cautious welcome to the Bank of England's rise the first for nearly four years. Consensus was that providing the rise was a reversal of July's precautionary cut and not the beginning a series of rapid rate rises then there was justification to stop consumer spending over heating.. Economic recovery is still at an early and extremely fragile stage and the business community, not just manufacturers will strongly resist any suggestion of sharp rises. David Frost, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce, reiterated this concern saying their own recent Quarterly Economic Survey indicated talk of a recovery in the beleaguered manufacturing sector might be premature. "While other surveys might hint at an upturn in this sector, there is still no hard evidence and a rising trend in interest rates might choke off any recovery before it begins," he said. |
Mobile Phone Warning New regulations come into force from the 1st of December, 2003, an amendment to the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 means that driving a motor vehicle and using a hand-held mobile phone, text messaging and using a hand-held with an earpiece or a microphone will be banned. Many employers and employees are likely to be effected by this legislation so it is important to find out what is legal and what is not. Some companies are advising their employees not to use phones at all when driving, whilst others will see it as an essential business tool, whatever is decided make sure it is legal and safe and that employees on the road are aware of this new offence. |
